The idea of the Society of Cardiopulmonary Technology Ltd was first brought into this country in 1967. Since then the society has expanded and evolved into a society sending information to those working in the technical fields of cardiac and respiratory units. The New Zealand branch now includes the respiratory technicians and changed the name of the society to incorporate this: from the Society of Cardiological Technicians to the Society of Cardiopulmonary Technology.
SCT is a non-profit incorporated society, the aim of which is to improve the training, education and professional status of those who are engaged in the science and practice of cardiopulmonary technology.
The society is run on a volunteer basis, by people who work in the profession. The council has up to 9 members at one time, and they are elected by the membership on a yearly basis. The council decides which positions those members undertake during their year on the council. It is a requirement that at least one member from the South Island sits on the council.

The society has run education courses since its conception. The courses closely followed those of the British Society for many years, but in recent times the courses have been changed to better reflect the needs of the profession in New Zealand. For more information on the society education courses, visit the Education Page.
